Do UK citizens need a visa to Vietnam?

Updated: According to the new law on entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam, the UK citizens DO NOT need a visa to visit Vietnam for up to 15 days each stay.

However, due to COVID 19, Vietnam’s borders remain shut to all foreign tourists, including UK citizens. We will keep you updated on any news.

How to Apply for Vietnam Visa for UK Citizens?

Whether visiting Vietnam on tourism or business purpose, UK citizens or BNO passport holders have 02 options to get a visa for Vietnam.

1. Apply Vietnam Visa Online (Recommended)

This is called a Vietnam visa on arrival (VOA). It is the easiest way for visitors from UK (including UK citizens and passport holders) who travel to Vietnam by air to get a Vietnam visa.

With VOA, you apply online via website: www.vietnam-visa.com by:

Filling out the secure online application form;

Receiving the visa approval letter by email.
Normally in 2 working days (for tourist visa) or 7 working days (for business visa), attached with Vietnamese application form (also as Entry and Exit Form).

Getting visa stamped upon arrival at Vietnam airport.

Advantages of getting a visa on arrival include:

  1. No document required for application;
  2. No travel required for application;
  3. Urgent processing (2 – 4 working hours for urgent tourist visa and 2 working days for urgent business visa).

Its only limitation is that it is for air travelers only. In case you are not traveling to Vietnam by air, consider applying for the visa by the following option.

2. Apply at Local Vietnam Embassy

Contact the local Vietnam embassy/consulate in the United Kingdom (if you are residing in UK), or in nearby countries (if you are not residing in UK currently) to get visa stamped on your passport prior to going to Vietnam.

To apply for a visa at Vietnam embassy in UK, the UK citizens need to prepare the following documents:

  • For tourist visa:
    • Application form (Click to download WORD VERSION or PDF VERSION)
    • Passport must be at least ONE MONTH valid prior to your proposed date of exit from Vietnam (but 6 months validity is highly recommended as the airlines may refuse your boarding);
    • Other documents as required by the embassy.
  • For business visa:
    • Application form (Click to download WORD VERSION or PDF VERSION)
    • Passport must be at least ONE MONTH valid prior to your proposed date of exit from Vietnam (but 6 months validity is highly recommended as the airlines may refuse your boarding);
    • Invitation letter;
    • Flight ticket or temporary flight booking;
    • Other documents as required by the embassy.

The application documents can be submitted in person at or by post to the embassy.

  • If you want to submit in person, please remember that the opening hours of the embassy are 9:30 – 12:30 Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
  • If you want to send them by post, please add a self-addressed envelope (not stamped) with clear FULL ADDRESS of the recipient, including the country name.

The visa processing fees vary according to the type of visa and length of stay, and can be paid either in CASH or by CHEQUE.

How much is a Vietnam visa for UK (England) citizens? It is US $46 (including US $21 for an approval letter and US $25 as stamping fee). This fee is for one 01-month single entry tourist visa, and it may vary depending on your type of visa and processing time as well.   • US $10/pax for 1 working day processing;
  • US $25/pax for 4 working hours processing;

Vietnam visa extension for UK citizens

Q: Hi. We are UK citizens flying to Hanoi to spend 6 days with our friends, and then leaving for Cambodia for next 5 days and then flying back to Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) for the next 5 days before leaving for our home. What are the visa requirements for Vietnam?

A: You can apply for the letter whenever you wish as it becomes valid from the arrival date granted, not from the date you apply for a visa or the date you receive the letter.

The latest time to apply for visa approval letter for Vietnam should be 2 working days (for tourist visa) or 7 working days (for business visa) to avoid urgent processing cost.

Q: Can I use Vietnam visa on arrival if I am not traveling to Vietnam by air, but bus.
