Vietnam Visa Extension and Renewal

Last update: Feb 11, 2020

Overstaying Vietnam visa will result in a penalty and also a poor mark in your history in Vietnam with Vietnam Immigration, so we highly recommend you avoid this situation. If you still wish to stay longer in Vietnam, in addition to leaving Vietnam and re-entering with a new visa, you may choose to extend or renew your visa in Vietnam when it comes close to expiration date.

Please follow the guide below on for more details on how to extend/renew Vietnam visa:

Requirements for Vietnam Visa Extension / Renewal

  • Your original passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the time of extension/renewal.
  • Your passport has at least 2 blank pages.

Visa Extension

If you are staying in Vietnam under 1 month or 3 months visa, you can extend your Vietnam visa when it is close to expiry date.  For extension, you will get a visa stamp on your passport indicating your new stay duration.

Here are some notes you should be aware of when extending visa while in Vietnam:

  • The extended visa is for single entry only.
  • The maximum validity for one extension is 1 month. It means that no matter your current visa is 1 month or 3 months, you only can extend for 1 month only.
  • You can do extension on your visa for 3 times at maximum.

The visa extension is also available to those entering Vietnam under visa exemption. The maximum extended duration is the permitted exemption duration.

Note: The visa extension cannot be done directly at the Immigration Office by you, but through a visa center in Vietnam.

Visa Renewal

  • Vietnam visa renewal is suitable for those expats who are exempted from a Vietnam visa for 15 or 30 days like Singaporean, Malaysian, or Russian nationalities.
  • The type of visa you can renew is single and multiple entry visas.
  • You will get a new page sticker (aka visa sticker) on your passport with its new duration. This is the main difference between visa extension and visa renewal.
  • Vietnam visa renewal fee is higher than for visa extension.

Note: This service is now not offered by the Vietnam Immigration Office. We will keep you updated immediately when we are informed of any changes.
