You may be able to extend your stay in Vietnam through a qualifying sponsor, depending on your current entry permission and reason for staying. An eVisa needs a different check: a sponsored new visa may be considered inside Vietnam, while an ordinary personal application for a fresh eVisa is made from abroad. Start with your permitted-stay expiry, because that date determines when you must act.

What Is Visa Extension and Renewal in Vietnam?
This section clarifies the concepts of visa extension and visa renewal in Vietnam, and explains how they differ from each other.
Visa extension
Visa extension is available for foreigners who wish to prolong their current stay in Vietnam without exiting the country. If eligible, you will receive an extension stamp in your passport that indicates your new permitted stay duration.
Note: Visa extension is good for single entry only.
Visa renewal
Visa renewal is quite similar to visa extension as it also allows you to continue staying in Vietnam without leaving. However, the difference lies in the outcome—when you renew your visa, you will receive a new visa sticker along with a new duration stamp in your passport.
As a result, visa renewal typically costs more than extension, as it includes additional fees for visa stamping and visa sticker issuance.
Note: As of now, visa renewal services are not available through the Vietnam Immigration Office. We will keep you updated with the latest changes as soon as they are announced.
Tourist visa extension
If you are visiting Vietnam as a tourist, check whether an extension is available for your specific entry status before planning a longer stay. An eVisa, a DL tourist visa and visa-free entry have different conditions and should not be treated as the same category.
Vietnam-visa.com currently provides extension assistance for eligible business visa holders. We do not offer a standard tourist visa extension service.
Can you extend your stay as a tourist?
You should not assume that a routine 15-day or 30-day extension is available. Before your permitted stay expires, contact the immigration authority to check whether an in-country option applies to your circumstances.
If no suitable option is available, arrange to leave Vietnam before your permitted stay ends. For a later visit, check whether you need a new visa and meet the applicable entry requirements before returning.
What should you prepare for an eligibility check?
Have the following information ready:
- Your passport details page.
- Your current visa or eVisa, if applicable.
- Your latest entry stamp and any endorsement showing your permitted stay.
- Your address in Vietnam and temporary residence registration details.
- Your reason for staying longer and intended departure date.
This checklist supports an initial eligibility enquiry. It is not a confirmed tourist visa extension application package. Obtain case-specific instructions before preparing sponsor documents or paying a service fee.
Processing time and fees
The available procedure, processing time and cost must be confirmed after your circumstances have been reviewed. Avoid making travel plans based on an extension that has not been approved.
Business visa extension
If you hold a Vietnam business visa, you may be able to extend your permitted stay with support from your sponsoring company or organization. Eligibility and the approved extension period depend on your documents and the immigration authority’s assessment.
Vietnam has two business visa categories:
- DN1: For foreigners working with enterprises and other organizations with legal status in Vietnam.
- DN2: For foreigners offering services, establishing a commercial presence or carrying out other activities under international treaties to which Vietnam is a party.
An extension of temporary residence allows an approved additional stay. It does not, by itself, issue a new multiple-entry visa. If you plan to leave Vietnam and return, ask your sponsor to check your re-entry documents separately.
Conditions
Before applying, ask your sponsoring company or organization to confirm that:
- Your current entry status and proposed stay support the application.
- The sponsor can provide the required sponsorship and supporting documents.
- Your passport remains valid for the proposed procedure and requested stay.
- Your business activities match the stated purpose of your stay.
- Any immigration or residence issues have been disclosed and addressed with the authority.
Required documents
The National Public Service Portal lists the following core documents for a temporary residence extension:
- Your original passport or valid international travel document.
- Form NA5: Application for visa issuance and extension of temporary residence.
For a business case, also have the following ready for review:
- Your current visa and latest entry stamp.
- Your temporary residence registration details.
- Documents establishing your sponsor’s legal status, where required.
- Supporting documents explaining your continued business activities.
Your sponsor should confirm the latest application form and any additional requirements with the receiving immigration authority.
How to apply
- Check your eligibility with your sponsor. Confirm the appropriate procedure, requested extension period and receiving immigration authority.
- Prepare and submit the application. Complete Form NA5 and provide your passport and the supporting documents requested. Follow the authority’s instructions for direct or online submission.
- Pay the applicable fee. Keep your receipt and appointment details. Provide additional information if requested.
- Receive and check the result. If approved, check the new permitted stay date in your passport. Confirm re-entry requirements separately if you intend to travel abroad.
Processing time and fees
The National Public Service Portal lists a processing period of up to 5 working days after receipt of a complete application and a government fee of US$10 per temporary residence extension.
Document preparation, requests for additional information and delivery may add time. Different fees may apply if your case requires a new visa rather than a temporary residence extension.
Agency service fees are separate from government fees. Request a written quote explaining the procedure, estimated total processing time and included services. The immigration authority makes the final approval decision.

What happens if you overstay?
Overstay fines for individuals rise in brackets according to the length of the violation. There is no single daily fine that you can multiply by the number of days.
The following amounts are set out in Article 21 of Decree 282/2025/NĐ-CP.
| Length of overstay | Fine for an individual (VND) |
| Under 16 days | 500,000 to 2 million |
| 16 to under 30 days | 5 million to 10 million |
| 30 to under 60 days | 10 million to 15 million |
| 60 to under 90 days | 15 million to 20 million |
| 90 to under 180 days | 20 million to 25 million |
| 180 days to under 1 year | 25 million to 30 million |
| 1 year or more | 30 million to 40 million |
The authority determines the applicable penalty. Additional measures, including expulsion where the legal grounds apply, may also be imposed. Paying a fine does not itself authorize a further stay.
If you have already overstayed, gather your passport, entry and visa records, extension papers and application receipts. Contact the responsible immigration authority promptly to resolve your status and confirm any departure requirements before relying on a flight booking.
Can you extend your stay without leaving Vietnam?
You may be considered for an extension inside Vietnam if your circumstances and sponsor qualify. You cannot assume that every visa can be extended for a standard extra 15, 30 or 90 days.
Under Article 35 of Vietnam’s consolidated immigration law, the inviting or guaranteeing organization or individual requests the extension. Immigration decides whether to approve it.
| Your current permission | Route to check | Main point |
| DN1 or DN2 business visa | Sponsored temporary-stay extension | Your business sponsor and supporting purpose must qualify |
| DL tourist visa | Extension under the applicable sponsored procedure | Approval and extra days depend on the case |
| eVisa | Renew by leaving Vietnam and applying for a new evisa | Evisas cannot be extended |
| Unilateral visa exemption, such as an eligible 45-day entry | Consideration of a new visa or stay extension | The law allows consideration; approval is conditional |
| 5-year family visa exemption certificate | Extension of the stay granted on entry | This does not extend the certificate itself |
Start by identifying the permission you actually used to enter. A traveler visiting for tourism may hold an eVisa, a DL visa or visa-exempt entry, so the purpose of the trip alone does not identify the procedure.at at the start. Changing visa purpose inside Vietnam is restricted to the cases allowed by law and results in a new visa.
